Language courses for everyone

Introductory information

The UNIcert® foreign language certificate is uniformly regulated proof of foreign language skills that are relevant for prospective academics outside of Germany.

The advantages of UNIcert® are in particular:

  • International comprehensibility and comparability (by assignment to the GER levels)
  • Language acquisition and application of technical competence and key competences in the foreign language

You can find more information on the UNIcert website .

Depending on the language program, you must successfully complete several modules for the UNIcert certificate. The order doesn't matter. With UNIcert I and II you receive the certificate by cumulating the individual performance records, with UNIcert III you also have to pass a final level test for the certificate you are aiming for. In this level test, the four competence areas reading comprehension, listening comprehension, writing and speaking are tested.

Back to table of contents

The Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) for languages makes the language skills of learners in Europe transparent and comparable. There are levels A1, A2, B1, B2, C1 and C2 for the sub-competencies of reading, listening, writing and speaking. Level A corresponds to elementary language use, level B to independent language use and level C to competent language use. The individual stages can be described as follows:

  • A1: Beginner
  • A2: basic knowledge
  • B1: Advanced language use
  • B2: Independent use of language
  • C1: expert language skills
  • C2: almost native language skills

You can find more information on the Goethe-Institut website .

A placement test is usually required in order to be able to take part in one of the UNIcert language courses. This ensures that the level of the language course corresponds to your previous knowledge.

A placement test is not required

  • if you have already attended a course at the immediately lower level;
  • if you attend a course at A1 level.

To attend an English course , please register here for the placement test. There you will also find more details about the dates.
If you want to attend other language courses , please register for the desired course and arrange an appointment for the placement test with the lecturer in the first hour of the lecture.

The placement test is valid for your entire course at Hof University.
