Composite Materials (M.Eng.)

Key facts
Academic degree: Master of Engineering (M. Eng.).
Duration: 1,5 years
ECTS: 90
Start: March
Language of instruction: German
Fees: none
Campus location: Hof
For new products, ever more efficient materials are required. Frequently, these materials are a composite of different materials – metals, polymers, and fibers with ceramic and mineral components. The development of new composite materials requires specific knowledge and techniques which can be acquired in this Master’s program. In addition to ceramic and metallic composites, we also specialize in textile composites and the fiber reinforcement of polymers.
It is important to have a holistic look at the lifecycle of materials – from production to recycling. Thus, graduates are well-equipped to take on demanding management positions in the fields of material science and technology.
Admission requirements
For admission, a Bachelor’s degree in material or surface engineering, or an engineering degree with a related specialization is required. The overall grade should be equivalent to 2.5 or better in the German grading system.
Study Program structure
The first semester is dedicated to the basics, chemistry and mechanics of composite materials as well as fibers and management for engineers. The second semester includes modules on polymer matrix composites, quality and optimization, as well as modern coating processes. The third semester is a practical semester and includes the master’s thesis.
Career perspectives
There is a wide range of employment opportunities for engineers in this field. These include, for instance, positions as a production manager, head of a materials laboratory, specialist for materials in product development, specialist for automotive lightweight constructions or application engineer for composite materials.
"Hof University - a place improving myself without riotous strings and pipes to confuse the ears
The small city Hof and its county have a population of about 150,000 people in total, there is no busy traffic and no bustling streets but positive learning atmosphere there. The 24-hour library is available for self-study at any time. The advanced experimental facilities made me even more excited, since I not only operated plasma coating equipment, but also experienced a whole nonwoven spunlace production line. What also touched me is that the German professors are extremely responsible and always patiently answer my questions until I fully understand.
In addition, the conditions of student apartment are also excellent, and students have their own single room. In the apartment, I also got along with friends from all over the world very well, experienced cultural diversity, and learned from each other to make progress together. In short, the learning experience in Hof University is an unforgettable and precious treasure in my life."
