Today the term “textiles” is not just considered a synonym for clothing and home furnishing textiles. Due to the vast progress in development, the field of textiles has advanced to become one of the hi-tech sectors of global industry during recent years. Their versatile functionality has rendered these innovative materials indispensable for technical applications, ranging from automotive to aerospace industries.
The Innovative Textiles study program provides students with a profound foundation in innovative materials science (fibers, yarns, knitted, woven and non-woven fabrics, finishing chemicals) and modern processing technology (surface engineering, finishing). This know-how lays the foundation for mastering materials engineering requirements such as optimizing processes regarding the manufacturing and finishing of textiles, while considering technical, economic and ecological aspects.
This study program prepares students for complex engineering tasks in textile and related industries. In fact, our textile engineering graduates are in high demand by industry and government, for a variety of careers in research, development, production, and management, both nationally and internationally.
Students learn together on our international campus during the final two years in international student groups, and fully in the English language, thus allowing them to improve their international skills. The first year of basic studies (covering the basic textile and engineering subjects) takes place at the student’s home universities in the local language.
The Innovative Textiles study program has an interdisciplinary curriculum drawing on diverse science and engineering principles. The program’s core subjects, which include extensive laboratory exercises, are complemented with appropriate electives to provide a curriculum with a broad base of fundamental engineering courses leading up to two specialization options. Participation in laboratory work by students is an integral part of the curriculum. Students develop a unique background, which allows them to pursue undergraduate research, internship experiences, and design projects. The program offers small class sizes with individual care from faculty.
After basic studies, students may choose between two specialization options:
„Textile Chemistry“: Students are provided with industry-relevant knowledge and skills concerning the finishing of all types of textile materials. Students are thus able to select, develop and optimize suitable processes (dyeing, printing, finishing and coating) as well as any necessary auxiliary product. The range of subjects enables students to carry out the finishing processes for textiles, as well as the production of textile composites, according to ecological and economic requirements.
„Innovative Textiles“: This specialization deals with the application of scientific and engineering principles to the design and control of all aspects of fiber, textile and apparel processes, products and machinery. Students gain knowledge in the areas of production, quality control and the development and design of textile products. With an emphasis on production technologies, such as yarn production, weaving technology, knitting technology and non-woven technology, students are familiarized with the selection of processes and machines used for economic production and optimization of textile parameters, particularly with respect to technical textiles.
Students of both specialization lines participate in extensive practical and laboratory training assignments, in addition to a mandatory practical semester. Students learn to apply their knowledge and skills to complex or unique tasks and to solve problems independently. The ability to integrate in teams and to become effective members of project groups plays an integral role in developing the students’ interpersonal competence.
Upon graduation, our students will demonstrate productive engineering practices, entrepreneurial behavior, research and leadership, or management within the public, private or academic sectors by using the technical, professional, ethical and societal knowledge, skills and attitudes required for success in the complex modern world.
Hof and Münchberg are not only university locations but also important centers for textile and material research. The textile and material research is concentrated in the Institute for Materials Science (ifm) and the Fraunhofer-Application Center for Textile Fiber Ceramics.

International Textile Summer
Also this year the International Textile Summer School took place in the period from July 10 to July 31 at Hof University of Applied Sciences. A total of 24 students from India, China and Australia attended the Summer School, which has been held for the sixth time.
After a welcome dinner with the organizers of the Summer School, Prof. Dr. Nico Behrendt and Kirsten Gebhardt, the participants were greeted the following day by the President of the Hof University, Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. Jürgen Lehmann, and the Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, Prof. Dr. Tobias Plessing, warmly welcomed.
New Building at Campus Münchberg
Since autumn 2016, a modern technical textile center for the production, finishing and analysis of different textile materials as carbon fibers and nonwoven is built at campus Münchberg and should be finished in spring 2019. In the new building modern laboratories and machines for research and teaching will be available. An even closer cooperation with the regional industry will be possible.
As you can see on the picture, the construction of the building is proceeding well. The interior is currently being installed and the first machines and technical equipment will be delivered soon.
